EXCLUSIVE: 'No Use For A Name' Singer Goes Solo
MP3
After 20 years with San Jose, CA, punks No Use For A Name, frontman Tony Sly will release his debut solo effort on Feb. 16. The record, titled 12 Song Program, finds the singer/guitarist breaking away from his punk roots in favor of a more polished, folk-inspired sound. Download album track "Via Munich" below.
Though just two minutes long, the new track is packed full of introspective longing that even the upbeat production can't hide. Sly's raspy tone roughens up the bright acoustic guitars, accordion, and sweeping strings, exposing his vulnerability as he address the tune's serious subject matter.
"This song is about the inevitable and constant consumption of alcohol that goes along with being on the road," Sly tells SPIN.com. "It's supposed to make tours seem shorter, but it's a method that doesn't really work and is terrible for your liver."
Sly kicks off a short West Coast run on Feb. 5 in Seattle with Foo Fighters guitarist/former No Use For A Name member Chris Shiflett. See the complete itinerary here.

Yes, I would say the person that said it is boring simply hasn't actually heard the new record. Which isn't even officially out yet. I bought one at one of the shows the other day...its a good record shows a lot of depth and musical variety. A bit of folk, a bit of stripped down rock and something that could best be described as a lullaby. Haters should give this a listen.

This guy simply has no musical talent. He can write (lately, pretty crappy) punk rock tunes, but he is no good musician or singer in general (he isn't even a great guitarist on electric guitar, so playing acoustic guitar is way above him). His acoustic stuff is boring, uninspired and without any niveau, I'm sorry to say this. The caper certainly does a better job. But even that isn't brilliant, but merely good for a punk rocker. The only person in punk rock who can actually pull these things off is Greg Graffin of Bad Religion, cause he is 1. a good musician in general, 2. a good singer in general, and 3. was never limited to punk rock, but actually always had a much broader horizon (and his roots are deeper than punk).
All these rip-offs should just stick to what they do best. And that's mediocre, sometimes nice punk rock.

Just got this delivered from Amazon and couldn't wait to tear open the package! Am a NUFAN fan and have enjoyed their music. The lyrics are pure genius, esp. Soulmate and Justified Black Eye. As I've already listened to a couple tracks, the lyrics Sly used in his NUFAN albums come through here even stronger. Very Good buy for 12 Program, especially at $8.99!
